Free Library Celebrates Black History Month with a Range of Programs
The Free Library of Philadelphia is celebrating Black History Month this February with special events throughout the neighborhood branches highlighting important Africans and African Americans in history. For a complete up-to-date schedule of events, visit freelibrary.org.

Watch the documentary Black Indians and discover how African Americans and Native Americans made an impact on American history.
Black History Teen Trivia Contest
Monday, February 13 – Friday, February 18
Tweens and teens aged 12 to 19 are welcome to join our week long trivia contest. Pick up your trivia sheet from Miss Veronica and see just how much you know about black history. When you return a completed sheet with the correct answers, you’ll increase your chance to win a cool prize.

African American Timeline
Thursday, February 16, 4:00 p.m.
Children 8 to 12 years old will learn about and discuss African American history from the 18th through the 21st century. We will create a paper timeline and chronologically record as many people as possible.

Black History Smart Board Trivia
Wednesday, February 8, 4:00 p.m.
School-age children and their families are invited to enjoy an interactive history and technology trivia game. Refreshments will be served after the program.
In addition to these citywide events, the Free Library will also offer events focused on the Haitian and Haitian American experience in concurrence with the 2012 One Book, One Philadelphia selection, Create Dangerously by Edwidge Danticat. Center in the Park Special February Events
The holidays may have faded into recent memory but there is still plenty to do and celebrate during the month of February at Center in the Park (CIP).
Wednesday, February 8 – 1:00pm – CIP Songsters Annual Black History Month Intergenerational Concert – Join the CIP Songsters, under the direction of Dr. Jerome Lang, for an afternoon of celebration in song with students from the Martin Luther King, Jr., High School. This is one of the Center’s most popular events, seating is limited, and refreshments will be provided.
Tuesday, February 14 – 1:00pm – The Love Café – The Love Café returns to CIP – join the CIP Poets and members of its Guitar classes, under the direction of Monette Sudler, for a cup of coffee, a light treat and words and music that will lift your spirits in celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.
Friday, February 17 – 2:30pm – Healthy Soul Food Cooking – Chef Orin Barkley, Executive Chef at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse, returns to CIP for a 4 hour demonstration – you will love tasting the results! Cost - $5.00 – Space is limited, register in advance by calling the office at 215-848-7722.
Tuesday, February 21 – 1:00pm – Jacoby ARTchiving – Rebecca Jacoby, MFA, will provide instruction on how to catalogue personal treasures, including collections, art and family heirlooms. Ccall the Program Office in advance to register at 215-848-7722. Cost - $5.00.
Saturday, February 25 – 2:00-3:30pm – The Climate Project.Org – In collaboration with the Green Sanctuary Committee of the Unitarian Society Germantown, CIP hosts Richard Whiteford, Certified Climate Change Communication Specialist for the Climate Reality Project for a dynamic presentation on the facts about climate change and its impact today and for future generations. Richard Whiteford is an environmental activist and writer. Alarm over the massive loss of Earth’s variety of plants, creatures, and ecosystems, and pollution’s dangers to public health, compelled Mr. Whiteford to devote his life to fighting for environmental protection.
Tuesday, February 28 – 1:00pm – Legacy Class – Taught by Jim MacDonald, a retired law enforcement officer and an assistant pastor, this class approaches personal legacies as being something to pass on not to leave behind and will discuss how to begin to gather mementoes, photos and stories and shape them into a video portfolio commemorating your life story.
Wednesday, February 29 – 6:00pm - Men’s Gathering Beer & BBQ – It’s a leap year and with an extra day in February, CIP’s Men’s Gathering is making the best of it by hosting the “Men’s Hangout” – there will be chair massages, film of boxing highlights, billiards and just a good time. Cost - $5. Register in advance by calling the Program Office at 215-848-7722.
Unless otherwise noted, events are free of charge, and all are welcomed to participate.
Membership in CIP is free for older adults 55+ although certain programs and services are free for 60+ older adults only. Call the Center to make an appointment with the Center Counselor or membership registrar to complete an application, Mondays through Fridays, 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, 215-848-7722. Register/sign-up in advance for all classes, including free classes and events, as space may be limited. Other CIP amenities include: daily lunch (free for adults 60 and over; and, $3.25 for adults under 60) – advanced reservations required – 215-848-7722, ext. 208; health promotion activities, a fully equipped and recently renovated fitness center and ongoing classes such as computer, pottery, painting, guitar, Zumba and Yoga. Classes are free or moderately priced at Center in the Park.
