The 5th Annual Old Rose Symposium: Sustainable Gardening with Old Garden Roses
Saturday, May 18, 2013
8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
The word “sustainability” has become a part of our everyday language, but what exactly does sustainability mean in reference to roses? We are increasingly aware of the importance of sustainable living to future generations, but are we growing roses in a truly sustainable fashion? The symposium will begin in the morning with fascinating talks and interactive discussion with our expert panel, including Stephen Scanniello, president of the Heritage Rose Foundation; Sarah Owens, curator of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's historic Cranford Rose Garden; and Kevin Glaes, director of the Penn-Jersey District of the American Rose Society. In the afternoon, symposium-goers will participate in two workshops of their choosing, such as “Hybridizing Roses” and “Propagating Roses.” The day will also include opportunities to explore the historic Wyck House and to purchase rare Wyck roses for your own garden! The 2013 Wyck Old Rose Symposium is generously supported by the Antique Rose Emporium, the Cheesecake Factory, the Heritage Rose Foundation, the Philadelphia Foundation, Star Roses and Plants, and Zieger & Sons. $105 per person, $85 for members of Wyck and/or the Heritage Rose Foundation, and includes lunch and dessert provided by the Cheesecake Factory as well as a cocktail at the end of the day. Register online at www.wyck.org/programs or call 215-848-1690.

This year's annual Mt. Airy Kids' Literary Festival is full of an eclectic bunch of activities that include a poetry slam, graphic novel workshop, yoga, music, crafts, and readings. This is the seventh year of the festival, and as an added community treat, both Big Blue Marble Bookstore and Color Book Gallery in Mt. Airy will offer a full line-up of activities. The festival will take place from Friday, May 17 to Sunday, May 19, 2013.
The Mt. Airy Kids' Literary Festival has been a neighborhood highlight in the past six years featuring local and nationally known children's authors and illustrators such as Adam Rex, Judy Schachner, David Wiesner, Brian Biggs, Amy Ignatow, Wendy Mass, and many more. This year's festival will feature Ame Dyckman, Mark Mattson, Kit Grindstaff, and a full line-up of programming for toddlers all the way up to young adults.
Some highlights from this year's schedule will be a new Mt. Airy Village Youth Poetry Slam for young adults, hosted and judged by award winning poet Ms. Alyesha Wise. There will also be a writing games workshop with local writer Cordelia Jensen, who just recently signed a deal with Philomel/Penguin to publish her first YA verse novel, Skyscraping.
"The Mt. Airy Literary Festival is so exciting to me on many levels: as a parent, as a writer, as a teacher and as a community member, " says Jensen. "It is so important that kids get to meet authors personally; it shows them that there is a face and personality behind the creative work. Also, all of our activities like yoga, music, games and story times all can work to inspire the children's own creative process. Not to mention the fact that the festival attracts all kinds of Philly residents to our spirited Mt. Airy Village."
Other highlights include reading and robot crafts with Ame Dyckman, whose book Boy + Bot won a 2012 Nerdies Book Award, and a reading with Kit Grindstaff, whose debut YA novel The Flame in the Mist, is being compared to Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy. "I'm excited to be in a festival at the Big Blue Marble, which I've only heard good things about from Zachariah OHora (whose festival appearance last year was part of his One Book Pennsylvania tour)," says Dyckman.
For a fully updated schedule events, visit Big Blue Marble Bookstore's website: www.bigbluemarblebooks.com. For more information on the festival or to receive press interviews/photos, please contact Maleka Fruean: malekakay@gmail.com.
