Points to Ponder

Germantown Preservationists Unite

Widely acknowledged nationally, Germantown is the most well preserved community in the United States when it comes to how much of its original infrastructure from 1648 forward still stands and with a substantial portion of it set aside and preserved for the benefit of those who want a window into life as it was in one of the earliest developing and self-sufficient communities in this country.

The Germantown Historical Society, originally established as the “Site and Relic Society of Germantown” dates to 1901 and maintains extensive collections, both documents and artifacts, reflecting the history of the developing Northwest, all of which was originally named Germantown.  Its offices are maintained on Germantown Ave. at Church Lane on Market Square.

Historic Germantown Preserved was established in 1985 for the promotion and preservation of historic Germantown as a non-profit organization focusing on charitable and educational purposes.  It also has extensive collections and maintains a significant public-accessible historical site at Stenton near Wayne Junction.

Effective May 6, 2012, the Boards of Directors and Members of both organizations voted to accept separate and joint resolutions to formally merge the two entities. They had been working jointly in an informal manner for several years.
